Law Enforcement - General Information

Paid Enforcers

City law enforcement has a command order that goes from guard captain to guard lieutenant to patrol lead to guard. Runners have a higher rank than city guards and are prioritized for safety, so they can quickly get help or send messages.

Guard

Unlike the volunteer law enforcement of small towns and villages, guards are paid by the city to protect it. As part of their service agreement, all their equipment is provided by the city.

Volunteer Enforcers

These types of law enforcers are unpaid and perform their duties out of pride and honor to protect their home. They also do it because there isn’t anyone else who can or there isn’t enough money in the coffers to have paid enforcers.

Militia

There are different militia that protect smaller towns and villages. All militia are volunteers proudly performing their duty to protect their home. Militia comprises maceman, spearman (variants of maceman), bowman, and gunman (variants of bowman). While volunteers, their equipment is provided by nobles of the town/ village.

Watchman

A watchman is a volunteer who patrols their neighborhood or entire town, or village, if small enough. They are a peasant who has taken up the mantel of protecting their home as there isn’t enough wealth to hire proper security. While they only report crimes to officials, if they are the only law enforcer, then they must take matters into their own hands.

Universal Special Abilities

Counter Disarm (1 counter action)

On a missed attack against a guard, the guard can use a counter action to disarm their attacker.

Restraining Orders (1 action)

Guards have lucky rolls when disarming, grappling, knocking out, and tripping targets. When a guard is successful on grappling a target, they can shackle them without resistance using one action.
