Types of Tools
Auger
A bit that is placed in a Brace in order to drill larger holes into wood. An Auger can be used without the Brace but has a -1 to crafting checks.
Anvil
Made of solid iron, these specially shaped blocks of iron are used in forges. They are combined with a smithy hammer in order to forge and shape metals into the desirable shape of the item being created. They come in small and standard sizes.
Bellows
A device with an air bag that emits a stream of air when squeezed together with two handles, used for blowing air into a fire. They come in two sizes, small or standard.
Brace
A U-shaped hand tool used by the auger to create larger holes in wood. The brace requires an auger in order to be used.
Broad Axe
An axe with a beveled edge on one side of the blade. This type of axe is used to create boards and other smaller pieces of wood from logs.
Bull Whip
A long-braided leather cord that is typically used to control livestock. It can trip and disarm opponents. However, whips cannot cause damage to armored targets.
Cauldron
Cauldrons are large metal pot with a lid and handle, used for cooking over an open fire. A large cauldron can brew enough ingredients to make four of the same concoctions. A small cauldron can brew half as much as a large one.
Compass/Ruler/Square
These tools are used in woodworking to make measurements.
Crowbar
This metal bar is used to pry open wood and other material that have been nailed together. Typically, used in woodworking, but also a common tool in the thieves’ guilds. When attempting to pry open a box, crate, chest, etc. with force, crowbars give a +1 to your check.
Engineering Toolbox
This set of tools comprises a wrench, hammer, screw turner, pliers, and ruler stored inside of a small wooden box with a handle. The durability and weight listed in the tools table is the box without the tools (parentheses is the weight with the included tools).
Makeup Kit
A set of items for costumes and altering the character’s appearance. Using a makeup kit grants the character a +2 to acting or deception. It typically takes two hours to use the kit properly and there are enough supplies in one kit for ten uses.
Nine Tails Whip
This multi-tailed whip is commonly used to deal physical punishment for those who step out of line. It is a common tool for slave traders and masters. It can trip and disarm opponents. However, whips cannot cause damage to armored targets.
Felling Axe
An axe used to chop trees down for wood. It requires two hands to use.
Gimlet
A small hand tool used for drilling small holes into wood without splitting.
Hammer
It’s a hammer, a tool to build things or defend yourself with.
Hammer, Smithy
A special heavier hammer that blacksmiths use with anvils to shape and form metal.
Hatchet
A smaller version of the hand axe and primarily used as a tool for splitting small pieces of wood or remove small trees and bushes.
Knife
Used mostly for cutting things.
Leatherworking Tool Kit
A small wooden chest that contains tools used for working with leather. These items are included: hammer, needle and thread, knife, cutting board, punch, groover, spacer, beveler.
Mortar & Pestle
A mortar and pestle is a device used to prepare ingredients or substances by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder.
Plane
A hand tool used to smooth out pieces of wood by removing small layers of the wood.
Pliers
A hand tool used to hold objects firmly. It is used for wiring and holding nuts tight as they are screwed in with a screw turner.
Pickaxe
Normally used in mines to remove ore from the ground.
Saw
A thin sheet of metal with a jagged sharp edge attached to wooden handles. Commonly used to turn logs into boards and boards into pieces of wood.
Scabbard
A special scabbard purchased in addition to a sword that deals damage. Normally, scabbards cannot be used in combat, while this scabbard aids in combat. A scabbard is considered a Dual Weapon when purchased for a blade purchased at the same time. The scabbard must be used with only that blade to gain the dual weapon special.
Screw Turner
A handheld tool made up of a narrow rod of metal with a flat end and a wooden handle encasing the rod’s other end. It is used to tighten and loosen bolts and screws.
Scythe
A farming tool used to cut large amounts of grass and crops. This is not designed to be used in combat and, if used as a weapon, has a -1 to its accuracy.
Shovel
Used to dig holes or beat annoying neighbors and then dig more holes.
Sickle
A farming tool used to cut grass and crops.
Tanning Rack
A wooden frame used to stretch up to eight square feet of pelts or hides in order to make leather. It can be collapsed during travel.
Tongs, Smithy
A type of tool used to grip and lift objects instead of holding them directly with hands. Used in a forge to grab hot metals from the furnace and move them to the anvil for shaping.
Wire (30ft)
Metallic wire spun together from smaller metal threads. This wire is about a half an inch thick.
Woodworking Toolbox
A large wooden chest that contains tools used for working with wood. These are the items included: auger, brace, broad axe, compass/ruler/square, chisel, crowbar, felling axe, gimlet, hammer, hatchet, plane, and saw.
Wrench
A hand tool that is a flat metal bar with a crooked claw end, used for tightening and loosen nuts.
