Step 2: Sub-Species & Mutations

Refer to Chapter 3: Species & Mutations

Now that you have your statistics, decide which sub-species your character will be. Sub-species influence your character's health, mental health, movement speed. The health and mental health multipliers determine your character's starting healths. The starting health multiplier is based on your vitality statistic. While mental health is based on the mental statistic based on the species of your sub-species. If you want to design an advanced character, you can choose the [halfoid] option to combine two sub-species. See the halfoid section in the [sub-species chapter] for more information.

Mutations

Once you have decided upon your sub-species, you need to select two Mutations of which you meet the species/racial requirements. You can only take mutations with the “(CC)” after the price when selecting your two starting mutations, but ignore the price. You must meet the species/sub-species requirements, but you can ignore any other requirements, such as statistics or skills.

Players can only choose two Mutations when creating a character.
You can only take Mutations with “(CC)” in the price as a starting mutation.
You only need to meet species/racial requirements. You ignore all other requirements.

Movement

Your sub-species determines how much movement you can make during combat encounters. You primarily used your movement during combat, but it can also help determine how far you can move in a specific amount of time outside of combat. Such as, you use movement outside of combat when running. Check your character’s sub-species stats under “Movement” to find out how far they can move, which is stated in feet (i.e. Movement: 30ft.).

Essence

Essence is your will and ability to overcome or unleash special abilities and energetics (magic). To figure out how much essence your character has added together your mental and channeling statistics and multiply it by two; then add any essence gained from mutations, masteries, sub-species, etc.

(Channeling + mental x 2) + sub-species bonus + misc. = starting essence

You can increase your essence by increasing your mental and channeling statistics and through masteries. See the essence section in game rules chapter for more information about essence.

Absolute & Maximum Essence

There are soft limitations on how much essence (internal energy) a character can contain. The absolute essence limit reflects this, which is the absolute amount your maximum essence can increase too. Your character’s absolute essence is ten times channeling.

15 x channeling = absolute essence

It is possible to increase the absolute essence outside of it naturally increases as your mental statistic increases. See Health, Essence, & Death in the game rules chapter for more information.

Mental Health

Everyone has mental health. It is used to show how mentally strong you are and, just like health, if it reaches zero, your character is no longer playable. To determine your mental health, each sub-species has a listed multiplier in the same way as physical health. The difference is that your mental health multiplier uses your mental statistic and as your mental increases, so does your mental health.

Mental x sub-species mental health multiplier = starting mental health

There is a limit to how much mental health each character can have, known as absolute mental health. This absolute amount of health is ten times your character’s mental statistic.

10 x mental = absolute mental health

You use mental health with insanity (Mentality). The more you go insane, the easier it is to die from loss of mental health.

Physical Health

You use your sub-species health multiplier and vitality to determine your starting health by multiplying your vitality by your sub-species health multiplier. During character creation, you only use the multiplier and do not use it afterwards.

Vitality x sub-species health multiplier = starting health
After character creation, the multiplier is no longer used.

Leveling and talents increase your starting health after character creation. The multiplier is no longer used. See the health section and leveling section in the game rules chapter for more information.

Absolute & Maximum Health

Just like absolute essence, everyone has an absolute health limit that represents the extreme range of how healthy a character can be. As you increase your character’s maximum health, it cannot exceed their absolute health limit. The absolute health for a character is twenty times vitality and increases as you increase your vitality.

25 x vitality = absolute health
